Day description

Day Day 1

Arrival in Evenes and bus journey to Svolvaer

Lofoten north of Norway.

Once you arrive at Evenes Airport, look for the airport shuttle bus, which runs to Svolvær. You can purchase the ticket at the ticket office or from the bus driver. The journey from Evenes Airport to Svolvaer takes approximately 2-3 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions. The bus schedule is organized to coincide with all top flights arriving and departing from the airport. The bus stops outside or within walking distance of all major hotels in the Svolvaer city center.

Depending on your arrival time, spend the rest of your first day in Svolvaer exploring the city.

Need to lose up your body after the long journey? Then, we recommend a visit to the floating sauna on the fjord. Step into the sauna, let your skin heat up, and quickly dip into the freezing water when you can’t take the heat anymore. It is a delightful refreshing sensation for both body and mind. Wash away all the travel stress and tension. It is one of the craziest, most exciting, and funniest experiences you can do in Norway.

Spend the next three nights at a hotel in Svolvaer.

Day Day 2

Fjord Cruise to Trollfjord

Fjord cruise on Trollfjord, Lofoten Norway (Albert-Bjornerem).

Today, you will embark on a 3-4 hours fjord cruise to Trollfjord, only reachable by boat or a 10-kilometer hike across the mountains. The tour begins with a scenic journey from Svolvaer to the fjord, passing through some of the most spectacular landscapes in the region. The modern and eco-friendly Brim Explorer vessel is designed to provide comfort and safety while minimizing its environmental impact.

The ship navigates into the narrow Trollfjord slowly. The Trollfjord is known for its narrow entrance, only 100 meters wide, and its dramatic scenery, with steep cliffs rising from the water. It almost feels like you are entering a cave.

Along the way, the guide will share engaging stories and facts about the fjord’s history, geology and local culture. As the ship approaches, you will have the opportunity to see the magnificent White-tailed eagles. These birds are a true sight as they fly through the sky, sometimes passing so close to the ship that you can almost touch them.

While back in Svolvaer, spend the afternoon doing the hike to Tjeldbergtinden. It is an easy/moderate 2 hours loop hike that takes you to the peak overlooking the town of Svolvær. You will hike through various landscapes, from dense green forests to rocky outcroppings. As you climb higher, the landscape opens up. Once on the top, enjoy the 360-degree view of the Lofoten archipelago, with its dramatic peaks and stunning coastline stretching out. The sense of achievement and awe you feel as you stand atop this mountain is phenomenal.

Alternatively, take a walk on the tiny island Svinoya, “Pig Island “in English, to experience the old fishing village atmosphere. Here, you can lose yourself in the tranquillity of nature, immersing yourself in the midnight sun’s golden glow.

If you are a foodie and like to try local food and specialities, end your second day tasting Stockfish, a true Lofoten speciality at Børsen Restaurant.

Day Day 3

The Arctic Route and Whale safari RIB boat tour

Whale safari in Lofoten, Norway (Martin Bril).

On your final day, you will experience the thrill of a whale safari by RIB boat. It is a 12-hour excursion including a whale safari, a bus journey along the Arctic route, one of Norway’s National Scenic Routes between Svolvær and the island of Andøya, and a ferry crossing between Lofoten and Vesterålen.

When you arrive at the meeting point, you are greeted by your guide, who will give you a brief introduction to today’s adventure. Svolvær is a popular spot for whale-watching as it is located in the heart of the Lofoten Islands, a prime location for humpback, killer, and sperm whales.

When you arrive in Andenes after the bus journey and the ferry crossing to Vesterålen, it is time to prepare for the whale safari. The organizer will provide you with a warm safety suit and get everyone onboard on the rigid inflatable RIB boat. As you venture out to sea, your guide will point out for you whenever he spots a whale and, if lucky, a dolphin and even a humpbacks. The excitement on the boat builds as everyone rushes to the side to glimpse the majestic creatures.

The whale safari in the RIB boat will take 2 to 3 hours, after which you will return to Andenes and the bus back to Svolvaer.

After the whale-watching safari, you can enjoy a hot vegetarian soup and bread for lunch and hot drinks.

You will be back in Svolvaer at 21:45.

Day Day 4

If you have chosen a three-night trip, you will travel home today. Board the bus that will take you to the airport. If you have decided to extend your trip, then today will be another exciting day to explore Svolvaer and its surroundings.

Day Days 4-5

Extended stay and optional activities

Kayaking in Reinefjorden, Lofoten, Norway (VisitNorway).

Suppose you want to extend your getaway in Lofoten to see more of this magical place. In that case, we recommend adding the Lofoten Islands in a Nutshell tour to your itinerary (available between 15 June - 15 August).

This two-day self-guided tour is an ideal and effortless way to explore Lofoten without renting a car. You will travel by bus and ferry from Svolvaer southwards to Reine, visiting charming villages like Henningsvær and Nusfjord, hiking to scenic viewpoints, and sampling local delicacies like fresh seafood and artisanal cheese. You stay one or more nights in Reine, where you will have time to go on a midnight sun kayaking trip or hike up to Reinebringen. After a visit to Nusfjord, you return to Svolvaer, where you can end your journey or add an overnight stay.

Check the bottom of this page for a list of optional activities and excursions that we recommend, especially for this trip.
