The first stop is the stunning Gullfoss, “the Golden Waterfall,” often considered the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland. The waterfall has two tiers, and it is possible to get close to the enormous volumes of water plunging into the canyon.
Right next to Gullfoss is the geothermal Geysir area, home to Iceland’s most active geyser, Strokkur. With Strokkur erupting every five minutes, you have multiple chances to witness the majestic water column shooting up into the sky. Stroll among the bubbling mud pools and steaming underground springs, and feel the forces of the Earth beneath your feet.
Next, visit the beautiful Þingvellir National Park, where Iceland’s Althing, the world’s oldest parliament, convened as early as the 900s. Iceland lies on the rift between the European and North American tectonic plates, and at Þingvellir you can clearly see the fault lines formed as the two continents slowly drift apart. Afterwards, you return to Reykjavik to continue on to the Blue Lagoon.
